Did you order bare root? Soak these in water for at least 24 hours before planting. For plants in pots, the potting soil must be moist.
Make a hole that is at least 1.5x larger than the root system. Damage the root ball and roots on the outside and add extra potting soil if plants of the same species have been there, or if the soil structure is poor.
Place the plant at the same depth in the ground/pot as at the nursery. If the plant is planted too deep, this often causes problems. Press the soil around the plant firmly.
Cover the tree pit with regular soil, so that the potting soil is no longer visible and cannot dry out. Then pour a bucket of water over the soil. It is useful to make a small elevation around the plant, so that the water does not run off. Now the plant is well secured!
Give the tree extra water during dry periods, especially in the first few years.
Keep the tree mirror free of weeds in these years. This allows the water to reach the roots of the plant better. Covering, mulching the mirror with twigs and leaves ensures less moisture loss and weeds.
Fertilize the plant in spring. This can be done with both organic and artificial fertilizers.
Prune the plant in winter or spring when it has no leaves. Or in summer when there is already too much growth.
