The Cudrania tricuspidata<\/em>, better known as Chinese strawberry tree or Che-fruit, is a unique fruit-bearing shrub or small tree that requires little space and yet yields a surprising amount. Thanks to its compact growth form and attractive fruits, this plant is particularly suitable for lovers of special edible crops.<\/p>\n

Growth habit and characteristics<\/strong>
This deciduous species grows naturally as a shrub or low-branched tree and reaches a height of 3 to 5 metres without pruning. Via pruning, it is easy to keep the plant more compact. The branches may contain thorns, which helps distinguish the plant from other fruit species in the mulberry family (Moraceae). The leaves are oval to lanceolate, dark green and up to 10 cm long.<\/p>\n

In June, inconspicuous white-green flowers appear in the leaf axils. This self-pollinating plant forms fruit at an early age - often as early as the second year after planting.<\/p>\n

Fruits and uses<\/strong>
The fruits are round, fire-red to purple-red and have a bumpy skin reminiscent of strawberries or Cornus fruits. The flavour is a distinctive mix of watermelon, strawberry and tangerine - ideal for eating fresh or incorporating into jam, desserts or juice. Ripening takes place in September and October, depending on the weather.<\/p>\n

Location and care<\/strong>
The Chinese strawberry tree is very hardy (down to -20\u00b0C, zone 6a), although young plants can be temporarily covered in severe frosts. It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded spot with well-drained soil, but is not fussy about soil type. Once well-rooted, the plant is reasonably drought-tolerant. Pruning is not necessary, except to remove damaged branches or adjust the shape.<\/p>\n

Application and added value<\/strong>
Besides its ornamental and edible value, Cudrania is also traditionally used in East Asia for supposed health benefits. Its combination of ornamental value, edible fruits and easy care makes this species an interesting choice for fruit gardens, edible borders or as a separate tub plant.<\/p>\n
