This ancient fruit species has been cultivated in China for over 6,000 years and is one of the five most important fruit trees there. The \u2018Dongzao\u2019 is a specially selected variety that is prized for its large, round fruits, excellent flavour and high yield.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"516\" data-end=\"1011\">The tree grows slowly and forms an open crown with graceful, glossy leaves that turn golden yellow in autumn. In spring, small yellow flowers appear, giving off a subtle honey scent and attracting many bees. In late summer and autumn, the glossy, brown date-like fruits, about the size of a gooseberry, ripen. They have a fresh, sweet flavour, with hints of apple and pineapple, and can be eaten either fresh or dried. They are also particularly tasty in jam, tea or desserts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1370\">Ziziphus jujuba \u2018Dongzao\u2019 is a robust, highly hardy variety (down to -30 \u00b0C) that is also drought-tolerant and undemanding in terms of soil. It thrives in calcareous, well-drained soil and also tolerates poor growing conditions.
