Enjoy the enchanting beauty of Paeonia lactiflora 'Shirley Temple', better known as the Peony. This peasant peony reveals large, hearty flowers that first show up as pink buds, but change to a beautiful white colour with a hint of pink on opening. The flowers stand out beautifully against the dark stems and deep green foliage. After flowering, the plant develops seed pods, while the leaves remain beautiful until autumn, sometimes showing autumnal colouration, depending on the location and weather.
This mid-season peony is reliable and vigorous, with flowers blooming from late spring to early summer. 'Shirley Temple' thrives in full sun to semi-shade and grows best in rich, fertile soil with good drainage. It grows to about 80 cm high and 60-90 cm wide, with attractive green leaves that remain beautiful throughout the season and often turn colourful in autumn.
This peony is virtually pest-free and resistant to deer and rabbits, but does attract butterflies. It is an excellent cut flower with a long vase life and requires little maintenance. Perfect as a solitary plant, in groups, in borders, beds, city gardens or cottage gardens. Enjoy combining this enchanting peony with roses, bearded irises and other perennials in striking colour combinations. With a lifespan of up to 50 years, these plants need not be divided and can grow undisturbed for years in a carefully chosen location.
