The Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails', also known as Feather Grass, is a refined semi-evergreen ornamental grass that retains its decorative value well into the winter. This clump-forming grass species has an upward growth habit and is characterised by its wafer-thin, light green leaves. From May to August, beautiful overhanging flower plumes develop in white-yellow to brown, which provide an enchanting colour effect.
The compact, upright growth of Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails' is accompanied by loose, golden flower plumes on long stems. These plumes bloom from June to September, elegantly drooping as the season progresses. The green leaves transform into a beautiful yellow hue in the autumn. This ornamental grass retains its decorative character for a long time and also attracts sparrows because of its beloved seeds.
The ideal location for the Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails' is a sunny spot in the garden, but a semi-shaded location is also suitable. This feather grass comes into its own in borders or in pots. The effect is most beautiful when planted in groups, especially in combination with a breeze for a playful effect. When mature, the Stipa tenuissima 'Ponytails' can reach a height of around 50-60 cm. This ornamental grass is very winter hardy and requires little maintenance.
