Corylus 'Tonda Romana', also known as Italian hazelnut, is an excellent choice for lovers of high-quality nuts. This medium-sized deciduous tree, which can reach a height of 3-5 metres, is known for its distinctive round nuts with a creamy texture and a full, nutty flavour. The nuts are valued for their culinary versatility and are often used in baked goods, desserts and chocolate dishes.
The hazel's hardiness makes it suitable for various climates, with a tolerance for temperatures down to -20°C. This selection from Italy, Corylus avellana 'Tonda Romana', is particularly drought-tolerant and thrives in a variety of soil types.
The nuts of 'Tonda Romana' are not only of excellent quality and fairly large, but also extremely productive. They start falling around mid-September and are loved for their intense flavour and fine aroma. Ranging from 1.4 to 2.5 cm in diameter, these hazelnuts have a crunchy texture and are ideal for both fresh consumption and use in pastries and confectionery.
However, this self-fertile variety can benefit from cross-pollination, so it is recommended to have at least two plants for optimum yield. After 3 to 4 years after planting, the first hazelnuts begin to appear. 'Tonda Romana' thrives best in rich, well-drained soil and can be planted in both full sun and semi-shade.
