Immediate results and production
These ‘old’ medlar trees provide instant mature structure, character and yield in the garden; full-grown specimens in ample pots, ready for immediate planting.
The Mespilus germanica ‘Tree & Fruit’ is a traditional medlar variety known for its excellent fruiting and the large, aromatic medlars it produces. The oblong to inverted ovoid leaves are densely hairy, finely serrated and soft to the touch. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful colour to warm reddish brown and golden orange, giving the tree great value as an ornamental tree as well. This old medlar tree comes at a height of approximately 2 metres, raised in a 45 litre pot at Kwee A rootstock, which provides a calm, well-controlled growth and a reliable annual yield.
In May-June, ‘Tree & Fruit’ blooms profusely with upright, creamy-white flowers 3-4 cm wide, with a remarkably large number of stamens. This flowering forms the basis for later fruit set, which is exceptionally good in this variety. The medlars are brown in colour, about 4-5 cm in size and recognisable by the wide calyx opening. As with all medlar varieties, the fruits do not become edible until they are soft-ripe after bletting (post-ripening). Then the flesh develops a sweet, mild and spicy flavour - ideal for compote, jam, jelly and traditional medlar syrup.
This medlar tree is hardy, tolerates calcareous soil and is known for its heat resistance and deep root system. It grows best on a sunny to slightly shaded position with a nutritious, well-drained soil. Its mature age ensures that the tree produces fruit immediately and adds instant character to the garden.
For safe transport, these heavy trees are shipped on a pallet.
