Rodgersia aesculifolia, better known as Scout's Night, is a striking perennial that gives your garden a tough look with its large, chestnut-like leaves. The green leaves have a bronze glow that gets stronger in the sun, and even without flowers it remains beautiful to look at. From June to September, it blooms with long, slender panicles of creamy white to pinkish white flowers, although flowering does not always come easily. Without flowers it is 60-70 cm tall, with flowers it can reach up to 100 cm. It grows slowly, but after a few years it will become a sizeable plant about a metre wide.
This plant likes semi-shade and requires humus-rich, moist soil that lets water through well - a dry spot is not for it. Near a pond edge or waterfront, it looks lovely, especially when the leaves reflect in the water. It flowers better in the sun, but then you should water it in hot weather to avoid burning. Too much shade means fewer flowers, too little shade can make the leaf colour pale. So put it in a spot where it thrives, and you will have a real eye-catcher. It doesn't handle wind well, so a sheltered spot is smart.
Sheriff's Night is hardy, but late night frosts can damage the leaves. In terms of care, it is easy: just give it some space and possibly split it after a few years if you want more plants. Perfect as a solitary plant, in groups in a border, or along a forest edge. With its tough leaves and flowers, it brings structure and atmosphere to your garden, especially in places where other plants struggle!
