Musa Basjoo, also known as Japanese Fibre Banana, is a tough and fast growing plant that will give your garden or patio a tropical vibe. This set of 2 plants, delivered in 9 cm pots with a height of 15-35 cm, is native to China and used in Japan for its strong fibres. It is the most hardy banana plant available, perfect for the Dutch climate. With its large, leathery leaves - which can grow up to 1.5 metres long - you can easily create a Mediterranean atmosphere, even in a small garden or on a balcony.
From April to September, it grows explosively, especially if you give it plenty of water and some fertiliser (e.g. organic manure or liquid feed every fortnight). It likes a sunny, sheltered spot, as strong winds can cause the leaves to tear - although this does not harm the plant. In full soil or in a large pot, it does fine, and with some luck it may even flower. The bananas don't become edible through the growing season here; they remain too small with lots of seeds. (Better edible fruits e.g. Musa sikkimensis), but the plant itself is a real eye-catcher. It can grow metres tall, up to 2-3 metres, depending on how you look after it.
Musa Basjoo is hardy to -10 degrees, but needs some help in the cold. In autumn, the leaves turn brown - cut them off and leave just the trunk. In case of frost, you can wrap the trunk with straw or reed mats to protect it, or dig it out and put it in a pot indoors at temperatures above freezing. Then give little water. In spring, it returns from the roots or stem, often even larger than the year before. Cover the soil with mulch or manure pellets for a good start. This plant requires some attention - lots of water in summer and protection in winter - but will give your garden a unique, tropical look you won't soon forget!
