Direct planting, any time of the year
Aronia × prunifolia ‘Brilliant’ is a chokeberry with white spring blossoms, red berries and striking autumn colour. The shrub is suitable as a specimen plant, in a mixed shrub border or in a loose hedge. The berries and reddening leaves provide a splash of colour, particularly in autumn.
Why choose ‘Brilliant’?
Contents of this product
Plants are natural products. Height, branching and the number of leaves may vary from plant to plant and from season to season. We cannot guarantee that the plant will be in flower or bearing fruit upon delivery.
Blossoms, berries and autumn colours
The small white flowers usually appear in April and May and are visited by insects. These are followed later by red rowan berries. The berries have a fresh, tart flavour and are particularly suitable for use in preserves, for example combined with sweeter fruit in jelly or jam. Feel free to leave some on the bush for the birds and for their ornamental value. A sunny spot enhances the autumn colour.
Growth and location
This deciduous shrub will eventually grow to a height of around 2 metres, depending on the soil and pruning. Choose a sunny spot or light partial shade and humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. The plant can spread via runners. Bear this in mind if planting in a narrow border or next to smaller perennials.
Planting and care
Moisten the root ball before planting and position it at the same depth as in the nursery pot. Water thoroughly afterwards. Keep the soil sufficiently moist during the first growing season and water even during prolonged summer droughts. A layer of compost in the spring helps to improve the soil structure and its ability to retain moisture.
Pruning and maintenance
Prune sparingly to preserve the natural shape. During the dormant period, remove dead or crossing wood and, in the case of an older shrub, gradually remove a few old branches at the base. This gives new shoots room to grow. Remove unwanted suckers when the plant grows outside the desired area. Excessive pruning can be detrimental to flowering and berry production.
Winter and application
‘Brilliant’ is hardy and loses its leaves in autumn. It can be kept in a large pot temporarily, or for longer with proper care, but the shrub has more room to grow when planted in the ground. Protect a pot during prolonged periods of severe frost and ensure the root ball does not dry out.
