About Castanea sativa
Castanea sativa grows into a large deciduous tree that can eventually reach a height of around 20 to 30 metres. The tree forms a broad crown and, as it ages, develops a characteristic, deeply furrowed trunk.
The leaf is oblong, glossy green and has a strikingly serrated edge. In autumn, the leaf turns warm shades of golden yellow before falling.
Blossoms and chestnuts
In June and July, mature trees may produce long, cream-coloured to yellowish-white flower catkins. Following successful pollination, the familiar spiny husks develop, within which the edible chestnuts grow.
This specimen was grown from seed. As a result, it will take longer for the tree to bear fruit than a grafted chestnut tree. Please allow for approximately 8 to 15 years before the first chestnuts appear. The exact period depends on factors such as location and growing conditions, amongst others.
As seedlings differ genetically from one another, fruit size, flavour, yield and growth habit may also vary slightly from tree to tree.
Location and care
The sweet chestnut grows best in a sunny to slightly shaded spot. Give the tree enough space to allow it to develop fully over time.
Castanea sativa prefers humus-rich, nutrient-rich and well-drained soil. It does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging or standing water very well.
Water young and newly planted trees regularly during dry spells. Older trees develop an extensive root system and are therefore better able to withstand temporary drought.
Prune
Pruning is usually hardly necessary. The sweet chestnut looks its best when given enough space to develop its natural crown.
If necessary, remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. For young trees, light pruning may be carried out to encourage the development of a well-shaped crown.
Winter care
Castanea sativa is highly hardy and well suited to the Dutch climate. The tree is deciduous and loses its leaves during the winter.
Young trees in very open areas may benefit from a little extra shelter during their first few winters. Once they are well established, no special winter protection is usually required.
Uses of chestnuts
Sweet chestnuts are edible and can be roasted, toasted, boiled or used in purées, desserts and other dishes. They are relatively high in starch and have been used in various European cuisines for centuries.
For lovers of nut and fruit trees
The sweet chestnut is an excellent choice for food forests, large gardens and landscape planting schemes. The tree combines beautifully with walnut, hazel and other nut trees to create a varied edible planting scheme.
