Corylus maxima 'Purpurea', also known as the Red Hazel, is a striking red-leaved shrub that produces long catkins in February and March before the leaves appear. This large shrub can grow up to 4-5 metres high and thrives in various soil types. The purple-red leaves in spring change to purple-green to dark green in summer. After flowering, the shrub develops hazelnuts in autumn. Suitable for sunny locations and various garden soils, it can be used in mixed borders or as a solitary plant in large gardens. The Corylus maxima 'Purpurea' has a striking ornamental value thanks to its irregular, spherical crown and brown-red male catkins. This strong and disease-resistant shrub is drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance.
