The Cydonia oblonga ‘Champion’ is a popular American nursery variety known for its large, yellow-green fruits with a wonderfully aromatic fragrance profile. The hard, firm fruit is ideal for processing into jelly, jam, stews and the traditional membrillo. This old quince tree comes at a height of about 2 metres, raised in a 45 litre pot at Kwee A rootstock. This rootstock provides a medium growth, a well-controlled crown and a reliable annual yield.
Champion blooms in spring with large, soft pink to white flowers that attract many bees. In the autumn follows a rich harvest of hefty, aromatic quinces that release their full flavour when cooked. This variety is known for its reliable production, strong growth and excellent disease resistance. The Champion is self-pollinating, making it ideal for solitary plantings.
This quince is hardy, strong and very suitable for the Dutch climate. It grows best on a sunny, fertile and well-drained soil. Thanks to the Kwee A rootstock, the tree maintains a nice, manageable growth habit and a healthy crown structure. Due to its mature age, the tree quickly produces fruit and immediately creates a mature look in the garden.
