Magnolia kobus, also known as the beaver tree or false tulip tree, enchants with a lush bloom of large, pure white flowers around the month of April. As the tree ages, these blooms become even richer and more abundant. The deep green leaves usually take on a beautiful yellow autumn colour. Red fruits may also appear after flowering. This magnolia grows steadily and is therefore also suitable for smaller gardens.
Although Magnolia kobus can eventually reach a height of 8 to 10 metres, growth is slow and mainly upright at first. Only later in life will the crown widen into a broad ovoid shape. The smooth branches have woolly hairy buds. The leaves, short-tapered and inverted ovoid in shape, turn a beautiful yellow in autumn. The flowers, fully open, appear before the leaves emerge and are about 10 cm in diameter. Beware of late night frosts, which can damage the flowers. Although young M. kobus specimens do not bloom profusely, they develop into rich bloomers over the years. Seedlings may possibly take a little longer to flower. After flowering, dark red seed pods appear, from which the pinkish-red seed emerges. The roots of this tree grow both shallow and deep into the ground.
Magnolia kobus is well hardy and thrives best in a sunny position.
