Morus nigra, or Black mulberry, is a beautiful large shrub that often grows into a characteristic mid-height tree. With its gnarled and irregularly growing trunk, surrounded by a dense crown, this tree is a standout.
In April-May, the Black Mulberry blooms profusely with pale pink single flowers, followed by large, deep red to almost black, edible fruits. These fruits, sweet-tasting, are often considered the tastiest among mulberry species. The tree thrives best in a sunny, warm and sheltered location, and is frost sensitive in its young years, but older plants are well hardy.
Native to Iran and Armenia, Morus nigra is a beautiful tree with a semi-open crown and dark green, heart-shaped leaves. The trunk and branches give the tree a distinctive look, while the dark red or black fruits, which resemble raspberries, offer a sweet taste. The fruits ripen from August, changing colour from green to white/yellow and eventually to bright red.
With self-pollinating properties, the Black Mulberry offers a rich harvest of unusual fruits. It is a source of vitamins, especially vitamin B, and is often used to make jam or enjoyed fresh. The winter hardiness of this tree is excellent, making it thrive in our climate (winter hardiness down to -22ºC).
