The Prunus avium ‘Rainier’ is a beautiful, productive cherry tree known for its unique, pale yellow fruit with a subtle red blush. This variety is loved for the sweet, juicy taste of its cherries as well as its striking appearance in the garden. The tree originates from the United States, where it was developed by Harold Fogle in 1952 and named after Mount Rainier in Washington.
Graceful flowering and healthy growth
In spring, the Rainier itself with numerous white blossoms that spread a light scent and attract plenty of bees and butterflies. After flowering, the large, yellow-red cherries develop in early summer. These are particularly sweet and have firm, white flesh that is very juicy. The Rainier eventually grows 3 to 4 metres tall and has an airy, upright crown.
Fruit and flavour
The cherries of the Prunus avium ‘Rainier’ are large, glossy yellow with a subtle red blush on the sunny side. They are very juicy, soft and extremely sweet - a real delicacy! The cherries are not only delicious to eat straight from the tree, but also perfect for making jam, juice or for in pies.
Care and location
The Rainier cherry tree prefers full sun in a sheltered spot. The tree has few soil requirements, as long as it is well-drained and fertile. Regular watering during dry periods and annual pruning of dead or crossing branches helps to keep the tree in good condition and ensure a rich harvest.
Pollination
Although the Rainier is a self-pollinating tree, it gives a higher yield if planted together with another sweet cherry tree such as Prunus avium ‘Stella’ or Prunus avium ‘Compact Stella’. This way, you will enjoy a bountiful harvest.
