The Pyrus communis ‘Sugar pear’ is a traditional and popular pear variety known for its sweet, soft and aromatic pears. The fruits are medium-sized, have a golden yellow skin and develop a delicious creamy texture when ripening. The Sugar Pear is especially popular for its pronounced sweetness and delicate flavour, ideal for fresh consumption. This old pear tree comes at a height of about 2 metres, raised in a 45 litre pot at rootstock Kwee Adams. This rootstock gives a medium growth, a well-controlled crown and a reliable yield.

The Sugar Pear blooms in spring with white blossoms that attract many bees. The harvest falls in the late summer, in which the tree produces medium-sized, yellow-green pears that become buttery soft after a short post-ripening period and fully develop their characteristic sweet flavour. The variety is not self-pollinating, so a suitable pollinator such as ‘Conference’, ‘Bonne Louis’ or ‘Beurré Hardy’ is recommended.

This pear tree is hardy, resists the Dutch climate well and thrives best on a sunny, fertile and well-drained soil.
