The Pyrus communis ‘Winterjan’ is a traditional, hardy Dutch pear variety known for its firm, aromatic winter pears with a slightly sweet, spicy flavour. These pears are often eaten later in the season, when they reach their full flavour and soft texture. The mature pear tree is supplied at a height of approximately 2 metres, raised in a 45 litre pot at Kwee A rootstock. This rootstock provides a medium growth, good fruit set and a tree that remains manageable with healthy, balanced growth.

The Winterjan flowers in spring, producing white blossoms that attract large numbers of bees. The harvest usually takes place in the late autumn, after which the fruit is left to ripen for a few weeks to develop the best flavour. The pears are medium-sized, firm and renowned for their characteristic winter qualities: they are excellent for storage and ideal for eating fresh or for light processing. The variety is not self-pollinating, which is why a suitable pollinator is recommended, such as ‘Conference’, ‘Beurré Hardy’ or ‘Bonne Louis’.

This pear tree is hardy, is highly resistant to cold and damp conditions and grows best in a sunny, fertile and well-drained soil. Thanks to the Kwee A rootstock, the tree develops a well-balanced crown, vigorous growth and a reliable yield.
