Rhododendron 'Marcel Menard' Purple flowers - Height 60cm - 1.5-litre pot

The Rhododendron ‘Marcel Menard’ is a robust, evergreen ornamental shrub that comes into its own in spring with dark purple flowers. This slow-growing shrub eventually reaches a height and width of around 2 metres and is suitable for use as a specimen plant, in group plantings or in informal hedges.

Characteristics and flowering
What sets this rhododendron apart is that it flowers from May to early June. During this time, the plant displays a rich array of deep purple flowers with a strikingly contrasting centre. The plant remains evergreen throughout the year, providing structure and colour even in winter.

Stand and soil
The ‘Marcel Menard’ It prefers a spot in partial shade or with filtered sunlight, but can also tolerate full sun provided the soil is sufficiently moist and acidic. A humus-rich, well-drained soil with a low pH is ideal. For best results, use DCM Vivimus for acid-loving plants.

Maintenance
Pruning is not necessary; simply removing spent flowers is enough to encourage new growth. If the plant becomes too large, it can be pruned back to the old wood – the shrub will sprout new growth, but will not flower in the first year. This rhododendron is very hardy and requires little maintenance.

Application
Ideal as a specimen plant in borders or as a dense, evergreen hedge. Combine with other acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias or ferns to create a harmonious display.
