Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief', also known as Chinese reed or beautiful reed, is an ornamental grass with an upright growth habit that reaches a height of approximately 175 centimeters. This beautiful grass shows elegant, narrow green leaves that get a warm brown color in the fall. From August it shows off red plumes that protrude above the foliage, which is a striking sight.

This ornamental grass is exceptionally hardy, but loses its leaves in the winter. In March, you can cut the plant back to about 10 centimetres above the ground, after which it will grow back fresh. Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief' thrives best in moist, well-drained soil and feels at home in both full sun and partial shade.

Its modest height makes the 'Red Chief' an excellent choice for smaller gardens. It also adds a special and graceful element to the garden with its striking plumes and warm autumn colours.
