Corylus avellana ‘Jefferson’ is a modern, high-quality hazelnut variety originally developed by Oregon State University. This variety is known for its large, flavourful hazelnuts, exceptionally high yields and strong resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB). Thanks to this reliable growth and excellent nut quality, ‘Jefferson’ is popular with hobby gardeners and professional growers alike.

‘Jefferson’ grows as a medium-sized, upright shrub about 2-3.5 metres tall and has an open, airy crown structure. Mature trees produce an average of 12-15+ kg of nuts per season. The nuts are round, well-filled and have a thin, easily cracked shell. Harvesting usually takes place in September. This hazel bears after only 2-3 years, making it ideal for new gardens, food forests and small orchards.

For optimal fruiting, ‘Jefferson’ needs a suitable pollinator. Combine it, for example, with Corylus avellana ‘Webb's Price Cob’ or another suitable hazel from our range for the best pollination. ‘Jefferson’ flowers long, allowing multiple pollination partners to encourage even higher production.

This hazel is very hardy (down to about -25 °C) and grows best in full sun on well-drained, humus-rich soil. Its reliable yield and strong disease resistance make it enormously suitable for edible gardens, hedges and small production gardens.
