Liquidambar styraciflua, better known as the American amber tree, is an ornamental tree particularly valued for its exceptional autumn colouring and characterful bark. In autumn, the hand-shaped leaves turn an intense palette of colours from yellow, orange, red to deep red, often several shades at once on one tree. This makes this species one of the most strongly colouring avenue and park trees.
In addition to its autumn colour, the amber tree also has a distinct ornamental value in winter. In later life, the trunk develops a deeply grooved, grey-brown bark with a relief reminiscent of a rough scale structure. The branches can also form characteristic corky ridges, giving the tree additional structure.
About the Liquidambar styraciflua (American amber tree)
The American amber tree grows to a very tall tree in its natural range, but in north-western Europe it usually stays between 10 and 20 metres. Growth here is moderate, especially in youth. Young trees have a slender, conical growth. Later, the crown develops wider and rounder in shape.
The leaf shape is somewhat similar to that of a maple, with five to seven lobes and a serrated edge. In spring, the tree blooms with inconspicuous flowers, followed by distinctive globular fruit heads that may remain on the branches until winter.
Liquidambar styraciflua needs a sunny location to grow well and colour optimally. The tree grows best in well-drained, nutritious soil. In winter, it loses its leaves and its graceful trunk structure remains visible.
