The Acca sellowiana, also known as pineapple guava, Feijoa or Brazilian guava, is an unusual evergreen shrub that not only has ornamental value, but also produces delicious fruit. With its silvery-green leaves, exotic flowers and sweet and sour fruits, this plant is a beautiful and functional addition to any garden, patio or conservatory.

Exotic look with edible fruits

Acca sellowiana has oval-shaped, dark green leaves with a striking silver-grey underside, giving it a Mediterranean look. In summer, the plant blooms with unique, fragrant flowers: white-pink petals combined with bright red stamens. These flowers attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects.

After flowering, small greenish-red fruits with a fresh pineapple-like flavour, often described as a combination of guava, pineapple and strawberry. The fruits are edible and usually ripen in spring after overwintering on the plant. They fall off the bush by themselves when ripe.

Growth form and use

The Brazilian guava grows slowly and can grow to a height of 4 to 6 metres in ideal conditions. However, regular pruning is excellent for keeping it in shape, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as a container plant on a balcony or terrace. The plant forms a compact, bushy shrub and is good to lead as a solitary or hedge plant.

Location and care

• Sunlight: Full sun or light semi-shade

• Bottom: Well-drained, humus-rich soil (not too wet in winter)

• Water: Water regularly during the growing season, avoid dry winters

• Hardiness: Moderately hardy to approx. -10°C (zone 8a) - protection recommended in severe frosts

• Pollination: Hermaphroditic (one plant can already give fruit), but cross-pollination improves yield and flavour
