Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ is a characterful Japanese maple with a unique leaf structure and compact growth. The name ‘Shishigashira’ literally means lion's head in Japanese and refers to the strikingly curled, firm to the touch leaf. In the Netherlands, this maple is therefore also known as the Lion's Head Maple.
Growth is slow and compact, making this cultivar very suitable for smaller gardens, pots and sheltered spots. With its unusual foliage and quiet form, ‘Shishigashira’ is attractive all season, with an extra strong ornamental value in autumn.
About Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ (Lion's Maple)
The leaves of ‘Shishigashira’ are small, firm and slightly curled, giving the plant a compact and almost spherical appearance. In the growing season, the leaves are fresh green. In autumn, this maple is among the strongest-coloured varieties, with shades ranging from orange to deep red.
Thanks to its slow growth and fine branching, this Japanese maple is also very suitable for developing as a bonsai. The plant responds well to topiary and can be gradually built up into a characteristic bonsai shape. In the garden, this species requires little or no pruning; thanks to its compact slow growth, this special maple gradually develops into a stocky tree of up to 5 metres tall, which takes a very long time.
In winter, the tree loses its leaves and is dormant. In spring, it sprouts fresh again. Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ feels most at home in a sheltered spot in semi-shade, in well-drained, humus-rich soil.
