Aronia prunifolia ‘Nero’ is an excellent choice for a sunny or semi-shaded garden. The plant flowers in May with white-pink, fragrant blossoms that develop into aubergine-black berries packed with nutrients. The berries have a tart flavour, but are loved by birds and can be used to make juice, jelly or jam. In autumn, the leaves turn a beautiful combination of yellow, red and purple. Aronia prunifolia ‘Nero’ is self-pollinating, hardy and deciduous.
It is important to plant the tree in soil that is not too heavy and to avoid planting it in loess or clay. Caring for the serviceberry involves removing old and dried-out branches in the spring, so that new shoots have more space and light. The plant is supplied in a 17cm pot. It is recommended to plant one plant per square metre; the mature height is 150–200 cm.
