Carya laciniosa, better known as the king nut, is an impressive nut tree native to North America. This remarkable tree is known for its large edible nuts, graceful growth habit and striking bark, which peels away from the trunk in long strips as the tree matures.

The king nut tree forms a broad, semi-open crown with slightly drooping branches and eventually develops into a distinctive tree with a natural appearance. In addition to its ornamental value, the tree produces sweet, edible nuts reminiscent of pecans.

Why choose Carya laciniosa?

• Large edible nuts with a sweet flavour
• Striking, elegant bark texture
• Beautiful golden-yellow autumn colour
• Very hardy
• Suitable as a solitary tree
• A strong and durable species of tree

Contents of this product

• 1 x Carya laciniosa – hickory
- Pot size: 5 litres
• Height on delivery: approx. 60–70 cm (approximate)

The tree is supplied in a nursery pot and will continue to grow into a large walnut tree after planting. The height on delivery may vary slightly depending on the season and stage of growth.

About Carya laciniosa

Carya laciniosa grows into a large tree that can eventually reach a height of around 20 to 25 metres. The crown grows into a broad, pyramidal shape with a semi-open structure.

The compound leaf consists of several elongated leaflets of a fresh green colour. In autumn, the leaves turn a striking golden yellow before the tree sheds them.

A distinctive feature of older trees is the decorative bark, which peels away from the trunk in long vertical strips.

The tree produces edible nuts that hang in clusters from the tree. The nuts usually ripen in October and November. When the outer shell splits open, the nuts are ready for harvesting. The flavour is sweet and aromatic, similar to pecans. The laciniosa is partially self-pollinating, meaning that this species bears fruit on its own, but the yield is noticeably better if it is planted near, or together with, a second specimen.

Care

Carya laciniosa thrives best in a sunny spot. It prefers nutrient-rich, moist yet well-drained soil.

When planting, compost or organic fertiliser can be added to improve the soil structure. Young trees in particular need extra water during dry spells.

Given the tree’s eventual size, it is important to leave sufficient space around it.

Prune

Pruning is usually only necessary to a limited extent. If necessary, unwanted or damaged branches can be removed in early spring.

The tree’s natural growth habit is shown to its best advantage when it is largely left to grow freely.

Winter care

The king nut is extremely hardy and can withstand temperatures well below -20°C. The tree is well suited to the Dutch climate and generally requires no additional winter protection.

How to use the notes

The nuts can be eaten fresh, but are also ideal for roasting or using in desserts and cakes. Thanks to their sweet flavour, they are often used in desserts or as a garnish.

For lovers of unusual nut trees

Carya laciniosa is an excellent choice for those who love unusual nut trees. The tree combines well with other Nuttrees or Fruits for a varied edible garden or orchard.
