Cordyline australis ‘Red Comet’ is a stylish, evergreen cabbage palm with striking dark red to burgundy foliage. Thanks to its elegant, upright growth habit and rich foliage colour, this plant is a real eye-catcher in both modern and Mediterranean gardens. It also looks superb on a terrace or balcony in a spacious decorative pot.

Although it often resembles a palm, the Cordyline is not a palm. Thanks to its exotic appearance and relatively low-maintenance nature, it is a popular choice amongst lovers of unusual garden plants.

Why choose Cordyline ‘Red Comet’?

• Deep reddish-brown to burgundy-coloured foliage
• Exotic appearance, decorative all year round
• Evergreen and low-maintenance
• Suitable for the garden, patio and large pots
• A beautiful eye-catcher when planted on its own
• A robust and relatively hardy Cordyline

Contents of this product

• 1 x Cordyline australis ‘Red Comet’ – Cabbage palm
- Pot size: 2 litres
• Height on delivery: approx. 40–60 cm (approximate)

The plant is supplied in a nursery pot and will continue to grow after planting. The height on delivery is approximate and may vary depending on the season and stage of growth.

On growth and flourishing

Cordyline ‘Red Comet’ grows into an elegant, tree-like plant about 2 to 4 metres tall. In its early years, it forms a compact rosette of leaves. As the plant matures, it develops a sturdy trunk and takes on its characteristic tree-like shape.

The long, narrow leaves are a deep reddish-brown to burgundy colour, providing a striking splash of colour throughout the year. This means the plant creates a beautiful contrast with green garden plants and ornamental grasses.

Mature plants can flower profusely in summer, producing large panicles full of small, fragrant white flowers. After flowering, decorative white to pale blue berries may appear.

Care

This cabbage palm grows best in a sunny to semi-shaded position. In a sunny spot, the colours of the leaves usually develop most beautifully.

Plant the Cordyline in well-drained soil. It does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Water regularly during dry spells, especially if the plant is in a pot.

Fertilising once a year in the spring promotes healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

Prune

Pruning is hardly necessary. Old or damaged leaves can easily be removed by gently pulling them away from the stem or cutting them off.

Once flowering is over, you can remove the spent flower stems.

Winter care

Cordyline australis ‘Red Comet’ is reasonably hardy and can tolerate light to moderate frost. In the event of prolonged or severe frost, it is advisable to provide extra protection for the crown and stem, particularly for young plants.

Potted plants are more susceptible to root frost and are best placed in a sheltered spot or wrapped up extra well during cold winters.

For lovers of exotic gardens

Cordyline ‘Red Comet’ combines beautifully with Trachycarpus palms, banana plants, Phormiums, Agapanthus, Yuccas and other Mediterranean or subtropical plants. Thanks to its dark foliage, this cultivar provides a striking colour contrast and a luxurious look in any garden.
