Would you like a unique fruit tree with striking orange fruit in your garden or on your patio? If so, the Diospyros kaki ‘Hana Fuyu’ is an interesting choice. This Japanese persimmon variety is known for its large, deep-orange fruit, which has a sweet flavour and a firm texture.
The ‘Hana Fuyu’, also known as the Giant Fuyu, belongs to the non-astringent persimmon variety. This means that the fruit is edible even when firm, without the astringent taste that some other persimmon varieties can have. As a result, the fruit is suitable for eating straight from the hand.
Why choose Diospyros kaki ‘Hana Fuyu’?
• Large, deep orange fruits with a sweet flavour
• Non-bitter variety: also edible when firm
• Self-pollinating variety
• Suitable for the garden or a large terrace
• Eye-catching autumn fruits with ornamental value
• Requires little pruning

About the Diospyros kaki ‘Hana Fuyu’
The ‘Hana Fuyu’ grows into a medium-sized, deciduous fruit tree with a mature height of around 2.5 to 4 metres. The tree has moderate growth and forms a compact crown.
In spring, fresh green leaves appear, followed by the development of large, flat-round fruits. The persimmons turn a deep orange as they ripen and can usually be harvested from November through to December.
The flesh is firm, juicy and sweet. As this variety has no tartness, the fruit can be eaten even before it is completely soft.
In autumn, the tree becomes particularly attractive thanks to the combination of autumnal colours and striking fruit, which often remain on the tree for a long time.
Care
Diospyros kaki grows best in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot. A position against a wall or in a sheltered part of the garden helps the fruit to ripen properly.
The tree prefers well-drained soil. Standard garden soil is usually suitable, provided that excess water can drain away easily. When planting, compost or organic fertiliser can be added to improve the soil structure.
During dry spells, regular watering is recommended, especially for young trees and potted plants.
Prune
The ‘Hana Fuyu’ requires little pruning. If necessary, weak or crossing branches can be removed in winter or early spring to maintain an open crown structure.
Fruit set occurs mainly on new growth.
Winter care
This persimmon is quite hardy, but young trees are best planted in a slightly sheltered spot during harsh winters. Extra protection can be useful in the early years, particularly during prolonged periods of frost and strong winds.
Potted plants are more susceptible to frost than those growing in the ground.
Use of the fruits
‘Hana Fuyu’ apples are perfect for eating fresh, but can also be used in desserts, fruit salads or autumn dishes. Thanks to their sweet flavour, they go well with both sweet and savoury dishes.
For lovers of unusual fruit varieties
The Diospyros kaki ‘Hana Fuyu’ is a lovely addition for lovers of unusual fruit trees and pairs well with other Mediterranean or exotic fruit varieties such as Figs, Pomegranates or feijoas. Combining different varieties creates a varied and eye-catching edible garden.
