The Diospyros khaki ‘Tone Wase’ is a Japanese sharon fruit tree (or kaki tree) renowned for its early harvest, honey-sweet flavour and abundant yield. This exclusive variety is one of the earliest-ripening kaki varieties and is a natural mutation of the well-known cultivar Hiratanenashi. The fruit ripens as early as the end of September, more than a month earlier than many other varieties, and has a remarkably high sugar content of up to 18–20° Brix – giving it an exceptionally sweet, aromatic flavour.

The ‘Tone Wase’ grows vigorously and forms an elegant, semi-upright crown with glossy, large leaves that turn a beautiful golden yellow in autumn. In spring, small, inconspicuous female flowers appear which develop into fruit without pollination; the tree is therefore self-pollinating. The fruits are large (up to approx. 180 g each), round to slightly flattened and deep orange in colour. The flesh is firm at harvest, but becomes buttery soft and very sweet once fully ripe.

This persimmon tree is suitable for planting in the ground or in a large pot and thrives in a warm, sunny spot with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. The Diospyros kaki ‘Tone Wase’ It is also surprisingly hardy (down to –15 °C) and can therefore thrive in the Dutch climate, particularly in a sheltered spot.
