Diospyros virgiana, American persimmon, Height 90cm, 3 litre pot

The Diospyros virginiana, better known as the American persimmon, is a deciduous tree suitable for lovers of edible and decorative trees. This species develops into a medium-sized tree with a broad, round crown and is notable for its robust black bark, leathery leaves and edible autumn fruits.

Growth habit and characteristics
This tree grows slowly into a solitary with a striking character. The shiny dark green leaves are oval in shape and turn warm yellow in autumn. The bark is deeply grooved and block-shaped, which remains a decorative feature even in winter.

Greenish-yellow flowers appear in the leaf axils in June. These are small and inconspicuous, but essential for fruiting. Female trees bear fruits of 2.5 to 5 cm later in the year, depending on the cultivar. The orange berry-like fruits are rich in natural sugars and taste good only when ripe and tender - ideally after a first night frost.

Location and care
Diospyros virginiana grows best in a sunny spot with nutritious, well-drained (preferably loamy) soil. The tree is well wind resistant, but does not tolerate cold, dry winds. It is very hardy (down to -25°C, zone 6a) and virtually free of diseases and pests.

Application and harvesting
Perfect for gardeners who want to combine sustainability, edible fruits and seasonal experience. The fruits are rich in glucose, potassium, phosphorus, vitamin C and provitamin A. Picking is possible from November into December, depending on ripening. They are immediately edible, keep for up to 4 weeks in the fridge and are also suitable for freezing.

NB: the fruits are not suitable for horses. If consumed unripe, constipation may occur.
