The Eucalyptus gunnii, also known as cider gum tree or fever tree, is a striking evergreen shrub or small tree with beautiful silver-blue leaves and a lovely, refreshing scent. This Mediterranean eye-catcher is fast-growing and is notable for its graceful, round leaves that are light grey in colour when young. When bruised, the leaves give off a strong eucalyptus scent that keeps mosquitoes and other insects at bay - ideal for the patio!
Eucalyptus gunnii is reasonably hardy (down to about -10 °C) and prefers to grow in a sunny, sheltered spot in well-drained soil. In severe frosts or prolonged wet winters, it is wise to mix white sand with the planting hole for extra drainage, or keep the plant in pots so that it can be overwintered frost-free. Overwintering in pots is best done in a cool, light spot (5-10 °C).
The tree or shrub can be pruned from April to keep the shape compact and encourage young leaves - ideal if you want to keep the decorative round leaves. Older specimens may flower with cream-coloured flowers in June and July. The bark is also decorative and will peel over time for an extra natural look.
Eucalyptus gunnii is not only beautiful, but also functional: the scent is insect repellent, the plant is drought tolerant and grows well in sunny, dry spots. A real all-rounder for garden and terrace.
