The Heptacodium miconioides, also known as the Seven Sons Tree, is a remarkable and graceful plant that has something to offer in every season. This botanical gem from China flowers in September and October, producing fragrant white flowers in striking clusters that attract many bees and butterflies. After flowering, the calyxes slowly turn a beautiful purplish-red colour, ensuring the shrub remains a striking sight well into autumn.
What makes this plant particularly unique is its flaking bark: in winter, the trunk sheds attractive, brownish-yellow strips, creating a lovely decorative effect once the leaves have fallen. In autumn, the green foliage turns shades of yellow, red and purple – a veritable spectacle of colour.
The Seven Sons Tree grows from a shrub to a small tree around 4 to 7 metres tall, with an elegant, vase-shaped crown. It is particularly well suited as a specimen plant in a border, as a natural boundary, or as an eye-catcher in an Oriental or biodiverse garden. It thrives in nutrient-rich, well-drained garden soil and is very hardy.
A robust, graceful and insect-friendly plant that offers year-round appeal.
