• Height on delivery: approx. 40 cm (depending on the season)
The height of Hibiscus moscheutos varies greatly depending on the time of year. This perennial plant dies back completely above ground every autumn. Consequently, in winter and early spring, little or nothing may be visible above ground.
As temperatures rise in spring, the plant will sprout again from the root ball. This often happens relatively late in the season, usually around April or May. A plant that is not yet visible above ground in spring is therefore not necessarily dead.
This natural growth pattern is characteristic of the species and is no cause for concern.
About Hibiscus moscheutos ‘Jazzberry Jam’
‘Jazzberry Jam’ grows into a vigorous perennial, reaching a height of around 100 to 150 cm. In spring, sturdy new shoots emerge from the root ball, after which the plant grows rapidly throughout the summer.
From July through to September, the large magenta-red flowers appear. Their size and colour make them a striking focal point in borders and ornamental gardens. The combination of large flowers, vigorous growth and excellent hardiness makes this cultivar popular with lovers of unusual perennials.
Care
This hibiscus grows best in a sunny position. A spot in full sun ensures the most abundant flowering and the most beautiful flower colours. The plant thrives in humus-rich, nutritious and moisture-retaining soil. It also generally tolerates slightly damper areas of the garden. When planting, compost or organic fertiliser can be added to improve the soil structure. During hot summers, regular watering is important for optimal growth.
Prune
Once the plant has died back above ground in the autumn, the old stems can be removed. Many gardeners leave the dead parts in place over the winter and only cut them back in early spring. This provides extra protection for the root ball.
Winter care
Hibiscus moscheutos ‘Jazzberry Jam’ is very hardy and can withstand temperatures of around -20°C to -25°C. It is important to note that this plant dies back completely above ground every year. This is a normal characteristic of the species. In spring, the plant sprouts anew from the root ball. As this hibiscus sprouts relatively late, it can sometimes seem as though the plant has disappeared. Give the plant plenty of time; often, the first new shoots only appear once the soil temperature has risen sufficiently.
Use in the garden
Thanks to its large flowers, ‘Jazzberry Jam’ looks stunning as a solitary plant or as an eye-catcher in a border. The plant combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, autumn asters and other summer-flowering plants.
This species also thrives alongside ponds or in damp areas of the garden.
