The ‘Cevaal’ apple tree is a lesser-known but highly regarded Dutch variety, renowned for its aromatic flavour and excellent balance between sweetness and a hint of tartness. The apples are firm and juicy, with a refined, slightly spicy undertone. This makes the variety suitable as a dessert apple, but also ideal for use in the kitchen.

The fruit is yellow-green to pale yellow in colour, often with a faint red blush on the side facing the sun. Thanks to its flavour and versatility, the ‘Cevaal’ is an interesting choice for lovers of less common apple varieties.

About Malus domestica ‘Cevaal’

The ‘Cevaal’ grows into a medium-sized apple tree, eventually reaching a height of around 3 to 3.5 metres. The tree has an upright growth habit with a slightly spreading crown and forms a well-balanced structure.

In spring, the tree blooms with white flowers with a hint of pink. The apples ripen in early autumn, usually around late September to early October. The fruit is medium-sized and has firm, juicy flesh with a pleasant sweet-and-sour flavour and a subtly aromatic character.

This variety is not self-pollinating and requires other apple varieties nearby to set fruit successfully.

Care

Apple trees grow best in a sunny spot. Plenty of sunlight ensures good flowering and fruit development. A sheltered spot helps to improve the yield.

The tree grows best in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Compost or organic fertiliser can be added when planting. Annual fertilisation in the spring promotes growth and fruit set.

In the early years, it is advisable to support the tree with a stake.

Prune

Pruning is best carried out in winter or early spring. This involves removing weak, crossing and inward-growing branches to maintain an open crown.

An open canopy structure allows more light to reach the fruit and helps to ensure healthy fruit.

Winter care

The ‘Cevaal’ is highly hardy and well suited to the Dutch climate. In winter, the tree loses its leaves and goes into dormancy. Extra protection is not usually necessary.

Use of the fruits

‘Cevaal’ apples are ideal for eating fresh as a snack, but are also perfect for use in apple sauce, compote, baked goods or juice. The combination of sweetness and a hint of tartness makes this apple very versatile.

For lovers of unusual apple varieties

The ‘Cevaal’ is an interesting choice for anyone who wants to plant less common varieties in their garden alongside the more familiar ones. Plant this tree alongside other apple varieties to ensure better pollination and a varied harvest. Planting it alongside soft fruit will also result in a garden with a longer harvesting season.
