The Malus domestica ‘Discovery’ is a beautiful summer apple tree that produces delicious, bright red apples early in the season. This apple tree is great for smaller gardens thanks to its compact growth and low trunk, making it easy to pick the apples without a ladder.
Fruit and flavour
The Discovery-apple is round to slightly flattened and stands out for its bright red colour, often with a slight yellow blush. The firm flesh is bright white and offers a refreshingly sweet to slightly sour flavour, perfect for eating out of hand. These apples are somewhat smaller in size and retain their juiciness and fresh flavour for about three weeks after harvest. This makes them ideal for immediate consumption, but less suitable for processing in dishes such as apple pie.
Flowering and pollination
Flowering starts early in spring with pale pink blossoms, which is a beautiful sight in the garden. For good pollination, it is recommended to use pollinators such as Cox, Benoni or Alkmene planting nearby. This will ensure a rich harvest in August.
Growth and care
The Discovery grows as a low stemmed tree with a nice, compact crown. It eventually reaches a height of about 3 to 4 metres, making it look good in smaller gardens too. The tree likes a sunny location and grows best in a nutritious, well-drained soil. It is hardy up to zone 6 and resistant to foliage diseases, making it relatively low-maintenance.
Pruning and harvesting
Proper pruning is important to keep the tree healthy and in shape. Preferably prune in late winter or early spring. In addition, make sure that you harvest the ripe fruits on time and regularly to prevent mould or damage to the branches.
