The Malus domestica ‘James Grieve’ is a classic and well-loved apple variety from Scotland, named after its discoverer from Edinburgh around 1890. This apple tree has been popular in private gardens and small orchards for more than a century because of its rich flowering, excellent flavour and versatile uses.

Fruit and flavour
‘James Grieve’ bears fairly large apples with a yellow-green skin, often with a red blush on the sunny side. The flesh is juicy, white and mildly acidic in flavour. These apples are particularly suitable as hand apples, but are also excellent in applesauce, apple pies, juices and cider. Harvest time is between late August and early September. The apples keep for a maximum of one to two months and taste best when eaten immediately after picking.

Flowering and pollination
In spring, around early May, this tree blooms profusely with soft white-pink flowers that are lightly scented and attractive to bees. ‘James Grieve’ is self-pollinating, but produces even better yields when there is another apple tree nearby. In addition, this variety itself is a excellent pollinator for many other apple varieties, such as ‘Cox’, ‘Benoni’, ‘Discovery’, ‘Pinova’, ‘Red Boskoop’ and ‘Delcorf’.

Location and care
This apple tree grows easily in a sunny to semi-shaded spot. It is hardy and suitable for almost any well-drained, fertile soil. The tree has an upright, medium-sized growth habit and eventually reaches a height of about 3 to 4 metres. Preferably prune the tree after harvest or in early spring to preserve its shape and production. Pick the fruit only when it is fully ripe, as harvesting it too early is detrimental to flavour.

Why choose ‘James Grieve’

  • Reliable and early harvest

  • Versatile: suitable for fresh use and processing

  • Good pollinator for other apple varieties

  • Easy to maintain and strong breed
