The Malus domestica ‘Akmene’ is a modern, strong and healthy apple variety originating from Lithuania. It is known for its fresh-sweet apples with a slight spicy undertone and its natural scab resistance. The variety produces medium-sized, firm-aromatic fruits that are ideal for eating fresh, but also versatile for use in juice, purée or baking dishes. This old apple tree comes at a height of about 2 metres, raised in a 45 litre pot at rootstock M111. This powerful rootstock provides a deep root system, excellent durability and vital, strong growth.

Akmene blooms in spring with pale pink to white blossoms that attract many bees. The fruits ripen in the late summer to early autumn, with the apples turning warm yellow to red, depending on sun exposure. The variety is self-pollinating, but bears more richly in combination with varieties such as ‘Elstar’, ‘James Grieve’ or ‘Santana’.

This apple tree is hardy, reliable and very suitable for the Dutch climate. It grows best on a sunny, fertile and well-drained soil. The vigour of the M111 rootstock makes it a robust, durable tree that stands firm even in variable soil conditions. Its mature age provides immediate yield and a mature look in the garden.
