The ‘Rode Boskoop’ is a well-known and widely used apple variety that is particularly prized as a cooking and baking apple. This variety is a red variant of the Goudreinet (also known as the red Goudreinet) and is known for its firm flesh and distinct, slightly tart flavour.

The apples retain their texture well during baking, making them ideal for apple tarts. They are also widely used in apple sauce and other hot dishes. The fruit has a robust appearance, with a red skin and a slightly rough, distinctive shape.

About Malus domestica ‘Rode Boskoop’

The ‘Rode Boskoop’ grows into a medium-sized apple tree, eventually reaching a height of around 2.5 to 3 metres. The tree has a somewhat erratic growth habit and develops into a distinctive fruit tree. The Red Boskoop is not self-pollinating and requires a pollinator, such as the Elstar, Gala, Fuji or Discovery apple tree.

In spring, the tree blooms with light pink to white-pink blossoms. After flowering, apples develop which can be harvested in autumn. The fruit has a firm texture and a fresh, tart flavour, making it ideal for use in cooking.

Thanks to its strong flavour and excellent cooking qualities, the ‘Rode Boskoop’ is one of the classic apple varieties.

Care

Apple trees grow best in a sunny spot. Plenty of sunlight ensures good flowering and fruit ripening. A sheltered spot helps to improve the harvest.

The tree prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. When planting, compost or organic fertiliser can be added to improve the soil. Annual fertilisation in the spring promotes healthy growth and fruit set.

In the early years, it is advisable to support the tree with a stake.

Prune

Pruning is best carried out during the winter months. This involves removing weak, crossing or inward-growing branches to maintain an open crown structure.

Proper pruning allows more light and air to reach the tree, which improves the quality of the fruit.

Winter care

The ‘Rode Boskoop’ is very hardy and well suited to the Dutch climate. In winter, the tree sheds its leaves and goes into dormancy. Extra protection is not usually necessary.

Use of the fruits

‘Rode Boskoop’ apples are particularly well suited to making apple tarts, apple sauce and other hot dishes. Thanks to their firm texture, the apple pieces remain intact during baking.

This apple is also ideal for stews and compotes thanks to its distinctive, slightly tart flavour.

For fruit tree enthusiasts

The ‘Rode Boskoop’ is a valuable addition to any fruit garden and pairs well with other apple varieties to ensure better pollination and a varied harvest. When planted alongside small fruits such as berry bushes, it helps create a garden with a longer harvesting season.
