The ‘Mediterranean Garden’ border pack has been put together to create a sunny border with a distinctly southern feel. The combination comprises eight different Mediterranean and exotic-looking garden plants with varying heights, leaf textures and growth habits.

Olive trees, fan palms and cordyline plants lend a Mediterranean feel, whilst Albizia, with its delicate foliage and summer blooms, adds a light, airy touch. Rosemary forms the ground cover, and Tuscan jasmine can be trained to grow up a wall, fence or pergola.

Plants are natural products. Their height, branching, leaf colour and stage of development may vary depending on the season and natural growth.

A Mediterranean border with varying heights

With its grey-green foliage, the olive tree is a distinctive Mediterranean feature. The two Trachycarpus fortunei, with their fan-shaped leaves, add height and an exotic touch.

Cordyline adds narrow, upright foliage, whilst Albizia julibrissin grows into a light, airy tree with delicately pinnate leaves and pink flowers in summer.

Rosemary remains low-growing and can be used at the front of a border. Tuscan jasmine is a climbing plant and can be trained to grow along a wall, fence, pergola or other support.

Location and planting

This border pack is intended for a sunny, warm and sheltered spot. Ideally, choose a spot in full sun that is protected from cold and strong winds.

Well-drained soil is particularly important. Many Mediterranean plants tolerate drought better than persistently wet soil, especially during the winter. You should therefore ensure that excess rainwater can drain away easily.

The pack is designed for approximately 8 m². Space is deliberately left between the plants immediately after planting, so that the olive, Albizia, palms and Cordyline, in particular, can continue to grow.

Place the larger structural plants scattered throughout the border and use the rosemary more towards the front. Ideally, let the Tuscan jasmine grow up a climbing frame.

Care

Water all plants thoroughly after planting. During the first growing season, it is important to water them regularly to help them develop a good root system.

Once the plants are well-established, several varieties in this pack can cope reasonably well with drier conditions. However, make sure that young plants do not dry out completely during hot spells.

In the spring, you may wish to apply some organic plant food to support new growth.

Winter care and frost

The hardiness varies between the different species in this pack. Trachycarpus fortunei is relatively hardy, whilst young olive trees, Cordyline, Tuscan jasmine, rosemary and Albizia, amongst others, may be more susceptible to prolonged or severe frost.

You should therefore plant these varieties in a warm, sheltered spot. During periods of severe frost, it may be advisable to protect them with, for example, winter fleece or another type of breathable protective material. Young plants and potted plants are particularly susceptible to frost.

Well-drained soil is also important in winter. The combination of cold weather and roots that remain wet for long periods can be more harmful than dry cold alone.

Seasonal variations

Albizia is deciduous and loses its leaves in winter. This is a normal part of its winter dormancy, and new leaves appear in spring.

Other varieties may show signs of leaf damage, discolouration or partial leaf loss during cold spells. This does not necessarily mean that the plant has died.
