Paeonia suffruticosa, better known as the tree peony, is a woody, deciduous shrub that sprouts anew every spring and blooms in May and June with large, striking flowers. This pink variety combines abundant flowering with a classic appearance and a light fragrance.
Unlike herbaceous peonies, tree peonies develop woody stems that remain visible above ground during the winter. As a result, the plant grows into a compact, shrub-like specimen that can remain in the same spot for many years.
About Paeonia suffruticosa (purple tree peony)
It flowers in late spring. The flowers are large, often faintly scented, and appear above the fresh green foliage. After flowering, the foliage remains decorative until autumn, after which the plant sheds its leaves. In spring, it sprouts anew from the woody branches.
The tree peony grows to a height of around 100 to 200 cm and requires little maintenance. Pruning is generally not necessary, apart from removing dead wood. Annual fertilisation in the spring encourages flowering.
Location and planting
Paeonia suffruticosa prefers a sunny to lightly shaded, sheltered spot in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. It is important not to plant the plant too deeply; the graft union should be just above or just below ground level. Tree peonies do not like being moved, so it is best to choose a permanent location straight away.
