Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is popular for its striking red young leaves. As the leaves mature, they turn a glossy green. This combination gives Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’, or photinia, a vibrant appearance throughout the growing season. The plant is suitable as a specimen shrub and as an evergreen hedge.
Why choose ‘Red Robin’?
The young foliage adds colour, whilst the older leaves lend texture to the garden. Careful pruning encourages denser branching. If left to grow freely, plants may produce panicles of small white flowers in late spring; regular pruning can limit flowering.
Contents of this product
1 x Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’. Supplied in a 3-litre pot, with a delivery height of 70+ cm including the pot.
Height, branching and foliage may vary from plant to plant and from season to season. Flowering and fruiting at the time of delivery are not guaranteed.
Growth and application
Without pruning, this photinia can grow into a substantial shrub several metres tall. To create a hedge or maintain a compact shape, prune it to keep its growth within the available space. When planting, bear in mind the desired final width and give the young plants space to establish their roots.
Location and care
Plant in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered spot. Nutritious, well-drained soil that does not dry out for long periods is suitable. Water after planting and during prolonged dry spells. A pot-grown plant requires more frequent checks of the root ball and must be placed in a container with good drainage.
Pruning and winter care
Prune in spring or early summer to maintain the shape and encourage new red shoots. It is best to use pruning shears to minimise damage to the large leaves. Avoid pruning too late in the season, so that young shoots have time to harden off before winter. Cold, drying winds and late frosts can damage the young foliage. Take particular care to protect newly planted specimens and potted plants during severe frosts.
