The Prunus armeniaca – ‘Abrikoos Kneusje’ is a healthy apricot tree whose shape does not quite meet the standards of our usual retail selection. Examples include a crooked trunk, a broken or previously damaged crown, unusual branching, or a less uniform shape.

There is nothing wrong with the tree’s health. The defect is mainly cosmetic, and the tree can continue to grow as normal after planting. As we do not wish to sell these specimens at the standard price as regular apricot trees, we are offering them at a reduced price as ‘seconds’.

Possible imperfections include, for example, a crooked or twisted trunk, a broken crown, irregular branching, one-sided branching or any other cosmetic imperfection. The exact imperfection varies from tree to tree and cannot be selected in advance.

These trees are actually sold as ‘seconds’ because they do not meet our usual standards for shape and appearance. However, the plants are perfectly healthy and suitable for further cultivation and bearing fruit.

Growth, flowering and fruiting

Prunus armeniaca is a deciduous fruit tree that can flower in early spring, producing light pink to almost white blossoms. Later, the familiar yellow-orange apricots may develop.

A cosmetic defect on the trunk or crown does not mean that the tree cannot produce new shoots or bear fruit later on. Bear in mind, however, that every bruise is shaped differently and will therefore develop in its own way.

Location and care

Apricots thrive in warmth and sunshine. You should therefore plant the tree in a sunny, warm and sheltered spot. A south-facing spot or one near a warm wall is ideal.

The soil must be fertile and well-drained. The plant does not tolerate prolonged waterlogging. Ensure it is watered sufficiently, particularly during the first year after planting and during hot, dry spells.

Pruning and reshaping

It is precisely with these scrawny trees that pruning can be worthwhile. A crooked or irregularly shaped tree can be gradually shaped over the coming years and guided into a new form.

Remove damaged or unwanted branches and select strong young shoots to help build the future crown. It is best to prune apricot trees during a dry spell in summer or after the harvest, and avoid heavy winter pruning.

Winter care

The apricot tree is quite hardy, but its early spring blossoms can be susceptible to late night frosts. A warm and sheltered spot helps to minimise the risk of damage to the blossoms.

In the autumn, the tree sheds its leaves and remains bare throughout the winter. In the spring, the tree starts to sprout again.

A healthy tree deserves a second chance

These little ones are too good and too healthy not to continue growing them. They just don’t meet the visual standards we would normally expect from a fruit tree suitable for sale.

If you don’t mind a tree having a crooked trunk, a missing top or an irregular branch structure, you can get a healthy apricot tree here at a lower price, which can continue to thrive in your garden.
