The Prunus avium ‘Bigarreau Burlat’ is one of the most popular sweet cherry varieties of Europe. This precocious cherry tree blooms in spring with beautiful white blossoms, followed by large, dark red fruits with juicy and aromatic flesh. The Burlat cherry is known for its smooth, sweet taste and is perfect for eating fresh, but also excellent for jams, juices, desserts or pastries.
The ‘Bigarreau Burlat’ is not self-pollinating and therefore needs another cherry tree for good fruit setting. Suitable pollinators include. ‘Sylvia’, ‘Karina’, ‘Kordia’ and ‘Regina’ The harvest period falls early in the season, usually around mid-June, when the fruits turn deep red and reach their full flavour.
This cherry tree grows vigorously and forms a nice open crown. It should be pruned after harvest, so that the tree remains healthy and gets good light in its crown. Plant it preferably on a sunny, sheltered spot at fertile, well-drained soil and give some annually organic fertiliser for optimum growth and yield.
