Prunus domestica ‘Bleue de Belgique’ is an old Belgian plum variety with blue to purple-blue fruit. The flesh is juicy and has a sweet flavour when fully ripe. The plums are suitable for eating fresh and for use in jam, compote or baked goods.
Blossom and harvest
In spring, the tree bears white blossom. The plums usually ripen in summer, often around August; the exact time depends on the weather and the location. Pick when the fruit is well-coloured and gives slightly to the touch. Harvest in several batches, so that each plum has time to ripen properly.
Pollination
To ensure a reliable harvest, we recommend planting another suitable plum variety with overlapping flowering times in the vicinity. Do not rely solely on self-pollination with ‘Bleue de Belgique’. Bees and other insects transfer pollen. Night frosts during flowering can reduce fruit set, even when a pollinating partner is present.
Location and care
Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot in fertile soil that drains well. Water after planting and during dry spells. For a grafted tree, ensure the graft union remains above ground level. A pot-grown plant requires a spacious pot with drainage holes and will need more frequent watering and feeding. The final height depends on the rootstock, location and pruning.
Pruning and winter
Prune sparingly during dry weather in the growing season, preferably after the harvest. Remove damaged and crossing branches and keep the crown well-ventilated. Avoid heavy winter pruning. The tree sheds its leaves in autumn; this is part of its winter dormancy. Protect a pot during severe frost and, in dry conditions, pay attention to the root ball even outside the summer months.
A healthy fruit-based diet
Thin out a very heavy crop in good time. This gives the remaining plums more space and reduces the risk of heavily laden branches breaking. Remove any damaged or diseased fruit and clear away any fallen fruit. The size of the tree is determined by the rootstock, location and pruning; ensure the crown receives sufficient light and space.
