Looking for a fruit tree that combines elegance, flavour and reliability? The Prunus domestica 'Opal' is the choice for those who love versatility, rustic character and juicy summer fruit. This dessert plum is known as one of the best-tasting varieties - a true must-have for your garden.
Why choose Prunus domestica 'Opal'?
Self-pollinating, with better yield when cross-pollinated with, say, a Victoria Early harvest - matures in late July to early August, slightly earlier than many other varieties
High-quality taste - fruit with sweet, gage-like quality, juicy and aromatic
Medium-sized, oval to round fruit with red-pink to blue-purple skin and yellow-green flesh that easily detaches from the kernel
Reliable and hardy - very suitable for private gardens in temperate climates (zone 6)
Easy to maintain - minimal pruning after flowering, good growth and excellent yields
This plum tree starts the year with a lush blossom in shades of white-pink in April. A tasty harvest follows in summer, which is excellent both when eaten fresh and when used in purée or crumbles. Due to the long harvesting period, you will not have surplus fruit all at once, but rather enjoy delicious fruit scattered
Growth & utilisation
Give your Opal a sunny, preferably sheltered spot with well-drained and improved garden soil. Prune if necessary after flowering to keep the tree airy and boost yield. Support with a pole is only necessary in unstable planting locations. Expect the first fruits after 2 years and full production after 4 years. (in open ground)
