The Psidium cattleianum “Red”, also known as strawberry guava or strawberry guava, is a tropical fruit plant with a delicious, exotic look and taste. Originally from South America, this evergreen shrub or small tree is becoming increasingly popular as a container or patio plant in temperate climates. The strawberry guava grows compactly, has a smooth cinnamon-brown stem and shiny dark green leaves that retain their colour all year round.
In spring (May-June), the fragrant, white flowers with remarkably long stamens appear. These bloom in small clusters in the leaf axils and attract bees and other pollinators. This is followed by the round to oval fruits, 1 to 3 cm in size, which turn from green to deep red or purplish red when ripe. The flesh is white and juicy, with a delicate flavour reminiscent of strawberry with a hint of spiciness. Perfect for eating fresh, but also excellent for jam, compote, desserts or fruit juice.
The Psidium cattleianum is self-pollinating and easy to grow. It likes a sunny, warm position and grows well in pots or tubs. In summer it requires regular watering, while in winter it likes to hibernate frost-free (at least +5°C). When planting, use aplanting soil for Mediterranean plants and combine it for an exotic look with our Pistachio trees (Pistacia vera) or Asian fruits such as the Chilean guava ‘Villarica Strawberry’ (Ugni molinae).
