Pyrus communis ‘Gieser Wildeman’ is the classic among the stewing pears and an indispensable asset for the lover of home-made, red-boiled pears. This typically Dutch variety is known for its small, rust-coloured fruits with a natural sweetness and mild aroma. Ideal for making tasty stews, without the need to add sugar, wine or colourings.

This pear tree blooms in April and May with elegant white blossoms. By October, the pears are ripe for harvesting. The fruit is not large, but it is full of character: a greenish-yellow skin with rusty blush and firm flesh that cooks a perfect red.

‘Gieser Wildeman’ is self-pollinating, which means that the tree will bear fruit even without another pear tree nearby. Nevertheless, cross-pollination with varieties such as Doyenne du Comice or Conference can provide higher yields. Bursary years (alternating harvest years) are common for this variety.

The pear tree grows slowly and remains compact, making it suitable for smaller gardens as well. At maturity, it reaches a height of about 5 metres, but as a low-trunk variety, it remains considerably smaller. In spring, you will enjoy a beautiful display of blossoms, while older specimens develop a gracefully shaped trunk.

‘Gieser Wildeman’ has few soil requirements, as long as it is well-drained. The tree prefers a sunny to semi-shaded location, with more sun providing juicier pears.
