Direct planting, any time of the year
The Rhododendron ponticum ‘Roseum’ is a vigorously growing, evergreen ornamental shrub with a natural look and classic blooms. This species is known as one of the original Rhododendrons that is common in wooded areas and park-like gardens. Thanks to its delicate pink-purple blooms and robust character, this Rhododendron is particularly suitable as a hedge plant, but also comes into its own as a solitary.
Characteristics and flowering
In spring - from April to early June - ‘Roseum’ flowers profusely with light pink to lilac-pink umbels. The flowers are slightly finer than in modern cultivars, giving the shrub a natural charm. The large, dark green leaves with pointed tips stay on the plant all year round and offer structure in every season.
Growth and application
This Rhododendron grows quickly, with an eventual height of up to 2 to 3 metres and a width of about 2 metres. It grows upright and forms a dense structure that is ideal for establishing informal hedges or creating privacy zones in the garden. Roseum‘ is also a valuable addition as a solitary or group planting in the border. It combines well with other acid-loving plants such as holly or ferns.
Stand and soil
The Rhododendron ponticum ‘Roseum’ Thrives best in semi-shade and on acidic, humus-rich and moist soil - similar to forest soil. When planting, add DCM Vivimus or garden turf to improve soil structure. It can also stand in the sun, provided the soil remains sufficiently moist.
Maintenance
This Rhododendron is low-maintenance. After flowering, spent flowers can be removed to direct energy to new growth. Pruning is rarely necessary, but for shape correction or rejuvenation, it can be pruned back to the old wood in July. After heavy pruning, the plant usually does not flower the following year.
