Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace', Black elder, 3 litre pot

The Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’, also known as Sambucus nigra ‘Eva’, is a striking, graceful elderberry bush with deeply cut dark purple to almost black foliage. With its elegant, lace-like appearance, the foliage is reminiscent of a Japanese maple, making it a unique feature in the garden.

In June and July this black elder blooms profusely with large clusters of pink to white-pink blossoms, which stand out beautifully against the dark foliage. These flowers attract numerous bees and butterflies. After flowering, deep purple elderberries, which are suitable for processing into jam, juice or wine.

‘Black Lace’ is a powerful, deciduous shrub which grows easily in almost any type of soil, provided it is planted in a sunny to partially shaded spot. It reaches a height of 3 to 4 metres, but is easy to prune back to encourage a more compact shape or to stimulate flowering. Regular fertilisation ensures a fuller, healthier plant.

Use this black elderberry as as a solitary plant, at the back of a border or in an informal hedge. Its dark colour adds depth and contrast to the garden, particularly when combined with lighter-coloured plants.
