Direct planting, any time of the year
The Schefflera taiwaniana, also known as the Hardy Finger Tree, brings a touch of subtropical atmosphere to your garden. Originally from the mountainous forests of Taiwan, this graceful shrub is characterised by its beautiful, hand-shaped leaves. These leaves, which grow in fan-shape on the branches, provide an exotic accent and make the plant a real eye-catcher in any border or on a terrace.
Growth and appearance
The Schefflera taiwaniana grows in a calm and even manner and reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 metres after about 10 years. It forms a dense, well-branched shrub and has an elegant, natural appearance. The leaves are leathery and dark green, with a distinctive hand shape reminiscent of a finger plant.
Flowering and fruits
When older, this finger tree can flower with greenish-brown flower panicles in August and September. The flowers are subtle and are followed by small fruits that add extra ornamental value to the plant.
Care and location
The Schefflera taiwaniana grows best in a sheltered spot in sun or semi-shade. The plant has few soil requirements, as long as it is well-drained. It likes a humid, moist soil and can withstand air pollution well, which makes it suitable for urban gardens.
Although the plant is reasonably hardy to around -8 to -10 °C, it deserves some extra protection in harsh winters. Consider applying mulch or fleece during cold spells.
Maintenance and pruning
The Schefflera taiwaniana can be pruned into shape well, should it grow too big or wide. Light pruning back in spring keeps the plant compact and promotes fresh, new growth.
Plus points in a row:
Exotic look with unique hand-shaped leaves
Moderately hardy, with light protection suitable for Dutch gardens
Easy to care for and combines well with other ornamental shrubs
Can also be kept in pots for terrace or balcony
